It’s been a busy and rewarding few months for artist Susan Walker, with new work, exhibition opportunities, and paintings finding their way to new homes.

During a month-long exhibition at TAG in Port Clinton, two of Walker’s works sold. Seven additional works sold through the Eyes to See exhibition. She also sold two Pittsburgh-inspired paintings directly from her studio and a floral painting to a private collector.

Walker was accepted into the Pittsburgh Society of Artists’ 60th Annual Exhibition, where two paintings, Feeling of Yes and The Choice, were exhibited at the Cranberry Municipal Complex in October.

Walker continues to develop her contemporary abstract painting practice, exploring color, movement, floral and organic motifs, and layers of mixed media. Her work often incorporates embedded words and textured marks, adding depth and intention to paintings created to bring joy, warmth, and a sense of presence to everyday spaces.

Beyond the studio, Walker continues to participate in and support Urban Sketchers Pittsburgh, connecting with fellow artists through regular sketching outings. She has also embraced a new creative outlet through Substack, where she shares sketches, studio processes, and reflections on her artistic practice through her publication, Splatterings.

As the holiday season approaches, Walker is preparing new work and smaller original pieces for holiday shoppers. She will participate in Winter in the Studios, a curated art-shopping experience at Aluminum City Arts on November 21. She is also planning Christmas card and mixed-media classes in November, with additional mixed-media workshops planned for the winter.

Looking ahead to the new year, Walker will exhibit a collection of paintings and works on paper at JL Shorr Galleries in Zelienople. The exhibition opens January 7, with a reception on January 23 from 2–5 p.m.

The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council’s next exhibit at The Arts Garage (TAG) is sure to inspire lovers of nautical, floral, and nature-inspired art. Three artists—Gregory Ehmann, Nicolette Tolomeo Germain, and Susan Walker—will be on hand to preview their work at a public reception on Friday, July 10 from 6–8 PM.

Susan Walker’s featured series, The Feeling of Yes, explores the quiet yet life-changing power of a single decision. Saying yes can be a commitment—to a relationship, a job, the military, or to faith. It can mean taking a chance on something or someone, stepping into the unknown, or choosing trust over hesitation. Often, it is a simple word, but it carries weight, direction, and possibility.

Through layered, expressive paintings filled with movement, color, and intuitive mark-making, Walker reflects these moments of decision—the turning points where courage meets openness. Some yeses are bold and immediate; others are quiet and unfolding. Each piece invites the viewer to consider their own experiences of saying yes, and how those choices have shaped their path, opened new doors, and created space for growth.

Rooted in both emotion and intention, The Feeling of Yes is an invitation—to notice, to reflect, and perhaps to embrace the next yes waiting to be spoken.

Artist Gerry Florida Revives "Why Art Project" with Highland Detention Center

Archives & Special Collections (A&SC) within the University Library System (ULS) is pleased to announce the opening of two recently acquired photograph collections by father (Frank Russell Hightower) and son (Frank Floyd Hightower). His son, Frank Floyd, followed in his footsteps to also become a professional photographer as well as a playwright and artist. His photos from the 1960s to the present document Black Theater in Pittsburgh, including the work of August Wilson, Rob Penny, Bob Johnson, Maisha Baton and Hightower himself. Community activities such as Black arts festivals and meetings held by community organizations like the Manchester Citizen’s Corporation are also documented. As a whole, these collections provide a remarkable visual representation of the African American community in Pittsburgh over eight decades.

On Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 4 PM Miriam Meislik (A&SC Media Curator) will host a conversation with Frank Floyd Hightower to talk about his career and highlight significant photographs.

I have published a new book, THE ASTOUNDING BRIDGES OF PITTSBURGH, which contains 30 of my plein air watercolors of our regions bridges plus 5 others of note. It is 32 pages, 8 1/2" x 8 1/2", soft cover, price is $20.00. In coordination with the book is an exhibition of 22 of the paintings at The Concept Gallery in Regent Square. The exhibition will close on May 27.
